Chad’s criminal court has sentenced former prime minister and opposition leader Success Masra to 20 years in prison for incitement to hatred and revolt and complicity to murder over a deadly May 2025 clash between herders and farmers in Logone Occidental that left 35 people dead and six injured.
Masra, leader of the Les Transformateurs party and a vocal critic of President Mahamat Déby, was also fined 1 billion CFA francs (~$1.8 million). He denied the charges, calling on his supporters to “stand firm.”
His lawyer, Kadjilembay Francis, condemned the verdict as “unworthy humiliation” and vowed to appeal. Masra and 67 co-defendants — mostly from the Ngambaye ethnic group — had faced accusations of orchestrating the violence.
Masra served as prime minister from January to May 2024 before breaking with Déby, whose presidency, formalised in an election earlier this year, followed his father’s three-decade rule.
