OpenAI has launched GPT-4o, an advanced AI model with improved efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and multilingual support, featuring enhanced voice and video capabilities that could challenge existing tech giants in the AI space.
OpenAI,creators of the popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT, has introduced its latest and most sophisticated artificial intelligence model, GPT 4-o ('o' for omni). The announcement was made at a significant event on Monday, where OpenAI also showcased a new ChatGPT desktop application alongside enhanced voice and video capabilities for ChatGPT. GPT-4o represents a significant leap forward, offering increased efficiency and reduced costs compared to its predecessor, GPT-4 Turbo.
The newly unveiled GPT-4o is accessible to both paid and free users, with some features already available and others expected to be introduced in the coming weeks. This rollout includes improvements that allow the ChatGPT model to utilize voice and video functionalities, potentially intensifying competition with established voice assistants such as Apple's Siri, Google's Assistant, and Amazon's Alexa.
During the launch, OpenAI revealed that GPT-4o would be incorporated into the ChatGPT chatbot and its application programming interface (API), which developers can utilize. The model boasts a doubling of speed, a 50% reduction in cost, a five-fold increase in rate limits, and support for over 50 languages.
OpenAI’s strategy with GPT-4o is comprehensive, aiming to democratize AI technology by making it available to everyone, including users on free plans. OpenAI CTO Mira Murati emphasized that this aligns with the organization's mission to provide powerful AI tools universally. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of accessibility in their technological advancements.
Moreover, OpenAI is in talks to integrate its technology with Apple's iPhone, a move that comes just before Google's AI-focused I/O developer conference. This potential partnership could further enhance the model's reach and capabilities, particularly in mobile technology.
