Zandile Mafem the man who is accused of setting South Africa's Parliament alight on January 2, 2022, has been declared unfit to stand trial.

The case involving Mafe was heard in his absence. Mafe was detained and accused of housebreaking with the intent to conduct terrorism, arson, and theft, after the National Assembly building in Cape Town was destroyed by fire in 2022.

Earlier this year, Mafe was sent for a psychiatric evaluation at the Fort England Psychiatric Hospital in Eastern Cape after he refused to be admitted to a Hospital in Cape Town.

The medical report, which has been much anticipated, was finally disclosed and the outcome of the independent psychiatric assessment conducted at the request of Mafe’s defence counsel found he was unfit to stand trial.
