A court in Tanzania's capital has sentenced four men to life imprisonment for the sexual assault and abuse of a minor, sparking widespread outrage across the country.

The convicts include Clinton Damas, a member of the Tanzania People's Defence Force, and Praygod Mushi, a prison officer. The other two men involved are Nickson Jackson and Amin Lema.

Along with the life sentences, each of the men has been ordered to pay 1 million shillings ($370; £275) as compensation to the victim. A fifth individual, a senior policewoman accused of orchestrating the attack, is set to face trial separately in October.

This case has sent shockwaves through Tanzania, a nation known for its conservative values. After the ruling at the Dodoma Resident Magistrate's Court, the men's defense attorney, Godfrey Wasonga, expressed dissatisfaction, arguing that legal procedures had been violated.

However, many activists and public figures have commended the court's decision, sharing their support on social media.

The incident gained attention after a video of the attack circulated online in August, prompting police to urge the public to stop sharing the footage to protect the victim and her family from further harm.

Tanzania has been grappling with rising cases of gender-based violence, with numerous incidents going unreported, as reported by local media.

Last month, the Legal and Human Rights Centre warned that ignoring such issues could lead to their continued increase in society. In related news, a police commander, Theopista Mallya, was removed from her position after making controversial statements linking the victim to sex work.
