Ghana’s Parliament has officially begun the process of vetting seven new nominees to the Supreme Court, following a formal request from President John Dramani Mahama.
During the House’s sitting on Tuesday, May 27, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin announced that the president’s nominations had been forwarded to the Appointments Committee for review.
The seven individuals nominated for the nation’s highest court include Justices Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei, Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh, Senyo Dzamefe, Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo, Philip Bright Mensah, and Janapare Bartels-Kodwo.
In his letter to Parliament, President Mahama urged lawmakers to act swiftly on the matter, emphasizing the importance of the nominees assuming office without delay.
He concluded the communication with a formal assurance: “Please accept the assurances of my highest consideration.”
The vetting process is expected to commence soon, paving the way for a potential expansion of the Supreme Court bench in the coming weeks.
