IMANI Ghana and security expert Prof. Kwesi Aning, have petitioned the Supreme Court to prevent the President from dismissing the Inspector-General of Police and other security agency heads before a pending legal case is resolved in May 2025.
The plaintiffs argue that removing these officials before the court’s decision would be unjust, as it could preempt the outcome of the ongoing legal proceedings.
This lawsuit follows growing speculation that the President plans to relieve the Inspector-General of Police and other top security figures of their duties.
In their application, IMANI Ghana and Prof. Aning are requesting an interlocutory injunction to bar the President and relevant governing bodies—including the councils overseeing the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Immigration Service, National Fire Service, and Ghana Prisons Service—from dismissing, suspending, or interfering with the tenure of the respective heads of these institutions.
The petitioners emphasize that their case presents significant constitutional concerns and that allowing the security chiefs to remain in office until the Supreme Court delivers its verdict would not harm the government in any way. They further argue that if their suit fails, the Executive would still retain the power to make personnel changes as deemed necessary.
The plaintiffs conclude that granting the injunction is a fair and necessary measure to prevent undue disruptions while the case is being adjudicated.
