Ghana has a new head of the Judiciary after Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie was sworn in as Chief Justice at a ceremony at the Jubilee House on Monday.

President John Dramani Mahama administered the oaths, marking the formal end of a transition triggered by the dismissal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo earlier this year.

The event drew senior figures from across the state, including the Vice President, members of the Council of State, the Attorney General, parliamentary leaders and the full bench of the Supreme Court. Members of Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s family were also in attendance.

In his remarks, President Mahama praised the new Chief Justice’s long public service record and urged him to place judicial independence and the speedy resolution of cases at the heart of his stewardship.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, after taking the oaths of office, promised wide-ranging institutional reforms aimed at strengthening the third arm of government.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s elevation caps a judicial career shaped by scholarship and steady progression through the courts.

Education: Trained at the University of Ghana School of Law; later earned an LL.M. in Constitutional Theory from Oxford University.

Judicial Path: Joined the High Court in 1993, moved to the Court of Appeal in 2005, and became a Justice of the Supreme Court in 2012.

Body of Work: Known for his constitutional expertise and human-rights jurisprudence, he has authored 87 majority opinions, particularly in land disputes and electoral cases.

Colleagues regard him as a careful but resolute jurist, with a reputation for clear reasoning and a command of constitutional doctrine.

With his appointment now formalised, attention turns to the direction of the Judiciary under his leadership. Court users, the Bar and civil society groups are all watching closely for signals of reform—especially around efficiency, access to justice and modernisation of the court system.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie enters office at a moment of heightened public debate about the justice sector, and his tenure is expected to shape the Judiciary’s trajectory for years.
