The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), has addressed the recent social media storm sparked by a viral video allegedly showing students being turned away from class due to dress code violations.
In a public statement signed by Dr. Ibn Kailan Abdul-Hamid, the head of the marketing department, the university defended its longstanding professional dress code policy, describing it as a vital part of its academic culture and mission to instill discipline, professionalism, and integrity in its students.
The viral clip, which captured what appeared to be a classroom enforcement incident, has generated a split reaction online, with some condemning the policy as outdated while others praised it as necessary preparation for corporate life.
Dr. Abdul-Hamid clarified that the footage was recorded and shared without authorization, urging the public not to jump to conclusions based on one perspective. He added that an internal inquiry has been launched and called for patience while the matter is investigated thoroughly.
“The University’s professional dress code is not arbitrary,” the statement explained. “It is rooted in a philosophy that prepares students for real-world expectations in corporate Ghana and beyond.”
He noted that the policy has been part of UPSA’s tradition for decades, embraced by generations of alumni who have gone on to occupy high-level positions across various industries.
While acknowledging the generational shifts that influence how students express themselves—particularly among Gen Z—Dr. Abdul-Hamid emphasized the importance of balancing individuality with institutional standards.
“We do not seek to suppress individuality,” he said, “but rather to harmonize personal expression with professional expectations.”
He also assured stakeholders—alumni, parents, employers, and the broader public—that UPSA remains committed to evolving with the times, but without compromising its core identity as a professional training ground.
“UPSA is not just an academic institution,” he said. “It is a professional brand. And like any strong brand, it evolves, but it never loses sight of its core values.”
