Thirty-nine individuals who participated in a weekend protest have been remanded into custody by the Accra Circuit Court following their arrest by the police for engaging in unlawful activities.

These individuals were part of a three-day demonstration organized by the Democracy Hub, a pressure group.

The protest, which addressed concerns about illegal small-scale mining (galamsey) and economic mismanagement, resulted in charges of unlawful assembly and related offenses.

The first group of ten protesters faced charges of conspiracy to commit a crime, specifically unlawful assembly. All ten pleaded not guilty and were remanded into police custody, with their case scheduled for October 8, 2024.

A second group of nine protesters also pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit a crime, unlawful assembly, causing unlawful damage, and offensive conduct. They were similarly remanded, and their hearing was also set for October 8.

A third group of 11 protesters faced the same outcome, with their case adjourned to the same date.

In a separate courtroom, another group of nine protesters was remanded into police custody, with their case to be heard on October 11. During the proceedings, a bench warrant was issued for an individual who failed to appear in court.

The arrests stemmed from the three-day protest held at the 37 Roundabout in Accra, where clashes occurred between demonstrators and the Ghana Police Service. Among those arrested was lawyer and social media personality Ama Governor, who was heard shouting, "emancipate yourselves from mental slavery" as she was escorted to court.
