The Wa High Court, presided over by Justice Osei-Wusu, handed down the sentence on October 30, 2026, following a full trial.

A 29-year-old tricycle rider, Naah Mashood, has been sentenced to 14 years' imprisonment with hard labour after being found guilty of defiling a three-year-old girl in Tiegber, a community in the Wa Municipality of the Upper West Region.

The Wa High Court, presided over by Justice Osei-Wusu, handed down the sentence on October 30, 2026, following a full trial.

According to a statement issued by the Upper West Regional Police Command on Tuesday, November 3, the convict had been entrusted with transporting the child to and from school.

The girl's parents had engaged Mashood to provide the transport service, placing the child in his care during her daily school journeys.

However, on February 23, 2026, he took advantage of the arrangement and lured the child to an isolated location, where he sexually assaulted her inside his tricycle, popularly known as a Cambuu.

The incident was subsequently reported to the Police by the child's mother.

Officers of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) arrested Mashood on February 24, 2026, and commenced investigations into the complaint.

Following the investigations, he was initially brought before the Wa District Magistrate Court before the matter proceeded to the Wa High Court for trial.

At the conclusion of the trial, the High Court found him guilty of defilement and sentenced him to 14 years' imprisonment with hard labour.

Reacting to the conviction, the Upper West Regional Police Command commended the officers who investigated the case and everyone whose contribution helped secure the conviction.

The Command also used the opportunity to remind parents and guardians of the importance of safeguarding children, particularly when placing them in the care of others.

It encouraged members of the public to report suspected cases of child sexual abuse and other offences against children to the nearest police station or DOVVSU office.

The Police reaffirmed their commitment to protecting children and ensuring that persons found responsible for sexual offences are brought to justice.
