Three Nigerian nationals have been arrested in Kumasi over their alleged involvement in a series of robberies targeting individuals who withdraw large sums of money from banks.

The suspects are believed to be members of a criminal network that monitors bank customers, follows them after withdrawals and steals their money, sometimes by breaking into parked vehicles.

The arrests followed an intelligence-led operation conducted on Saturday, October 31, 2026, by a special police team.

According to a statement signed by Superintendent Godwin Ahianyo, Head of Public Affairs of the Ashanti Regional Police Command, the operation involved personnel from the Criminal Investigations Department's Anti-Armed Robbery Unit and the Accra Regional Police Intelligence Directorate.

The operation, which began at approximately 11:30 p.m., initially led officers to a hotel at Moshie Zongo in Kumasi, where two Nigerian nationals were arrested.

The suspects were identified as Aboy Promise, 30, and Favour Uwalaka, 45.

A search of their hotel rooms led to the retrieval of GH¢1,600 in cash, several mobile phones, a Royal motorbike and a master key suspected to have been used to gain unauthorised access to vehicles.

Police believe the items may be connected to the group's alleged criminal activities.

How the suspects allegedly operated

According to the Police, the suspected syndicate targeted customers who had withdrawn substantial amounts of money from banks within Kumasi and its surrounding communities.

Members of the group allegedly monitored activities around banking premises and identified individuals carrying large sums of money.

They would then follow their targets and, depending on the circumstances, allegedly rob them or gain access to their unattended vehicles to steal cash left inside.

Investigators suspect that the recovered master key was one of the tools used to enter vehicles without the owners' permission.

During questioning, the two arrested suspects reportedly admitted their involvement in some of the robberies and provided information about other alleged members of the group.

They identified two individuals known as Chinedu, also called Alhaji, and Kingsley, also known as KC.

Acting on the information, officers proceeded to another hotel at Dechemso, a suburb of Kumasi, where they arrested Kingsley, a 35-year-old Nigerian national.

The fourth suspect, Chinedu, remains at large.

Suspects linked to GH¢15,000 robbery

The Police further disclosed that the three arrested individuals allegedly admitted their involvement in a robbery at Asokore Mampong on October 27, 2026.

The victim was reportedly robbed of GH¢15,000 after withdrawing the money from Kwamang Rural Bank.

Investigators say the suspects also allegedly acknowledged involvement in similar incidents connected to the Atonsu branch of Fidelity Bank, the Ahodwo branch of Access Bank and other locations within the Kumasi area.

The Police are continuing investigations to establish the full extent of the suspects' alleged activities and identify any additional persons involved.

Police appeal for information on wanted suspect

Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Police Command has appealed to members of the public to assist in locating Chinedu, also known as Alhaji.

Anyone with credible information about his whereabouts has been encouraged to contact the nearest police station or call the emergency numbers 191 and 112.

Information may also be provided through the toll-free number 18555.

The three arrested suspects have been handed over to the Ashanti Regional Police Command to assist with further investigations.

The Police have also advised bank customers to remain vigilant when withdrawing large sums of money and to take precautions against individuals who may be monitoring their movements.

The allegations against the suspects remain under investigation, and their reported admissions to investigators do not amount to findings of guilt by a court.
