On Thursday, the State filed a new charge against Oliver Barker-Vormawor, who leads the Democracy Hub, an anti-galamsey advocacy group.
Barker-Vormawor was initially accused of stealing keys to a police towing vehicle. However, during the court session, Senior State Attorney Nana Ama Adinkra presented a revised charge sheet to the court.
The original charge sheet was withdrawn, with the new one substituting the theft accusation. Instead, Barker-Vormawor now faces a charge of "intentionally turning off the ignition of a police towing truck."
The state also decided to discharge four other individuals connected to the case: Cedric Bansah, Emmanuel Offei, Nana Amo Mensah Prempeh, and Thomas Yeboah.
Barker-Vormawor, along with eight others, is currently facing several charges, including conspiracy, unlawful assembly, causing unlawful damage, offensive conduct likely to disrupt peace, and assault on a public officer. They have all pleaded not guilty and remain on bail.
A few weeks prior, police arrested 53 members of Democracy Hub on allegations of lawlessness during a protest. While an Accra Circuit Court had earlier released seven protesters, on October 24, four more individuals were also discharged after the state dropped their charges.
