Five individuals have been arrested by the Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners Taskforce for engaging in illegal mining activities along the Birim River at Mampong in the Atewa East District of the Eastern Region.
The operation is part of a broader effort to tackle illegal mining, or "galamsey," which has been damaging the environment in the region. As part of the crackdown, the task force destroyed 40 changfans, equipment typically used in these illegal operations, and seized two newly constructed changfans that were about to be launched into the river.
This operation highlights the task force’s dedication to eradicating illegal mining in the area. Among those arrested were two miners who were caught working in the river when the task force surrounded them, showcasing their well-coordinated strategy following recent military actions that had already dismantled several changfans.
As the task force was leaving the site, they intercepted a truck carrying two additional changfans intended for illegal mining. The individuals in the truck attempted to flee but were quickly apprehended.
This incident emphasizes the resilience of illegal miners, who persist with their operations despite law enforcement efforts. One of the suspects, identified as Nana Kwadwo Ayimadu, tried to claim ownership of the equipment and obstruct the task force's efforts to remove the truck.
All five suspects are now in custody at the Kibi District Police Command and are expected to face legal charges soon.
