The move, described as a cornerstone in government’s anti-galamsey strategy, is aimed at tightening Ghana’s mining regulatory framework and halting the widespread environmental destruction caused by illegal mining.

The Acting Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah (MP), has requested the Attorney-General’s Office to initiate the formal and immediate revocation of Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2462 and its amendment, L.I. 2501.

The move, described as a cornerstone in government’s anti-galamsey strategy, is aimed at tightening Ghana’s mining regulatory framework and halting the widespread environmental destruction caused by illegal mining.

In a statement signed by Ama Mawusi Mawuenyefia, Director of Communications at the Lands Ministry, the Minister assured Ghanaians that revoking the instruments will not create a regulatory vacuum.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), he explained, already has a robust legal and operational framework to oversee mining activities and enforce environmental standards.

The Attorney-General’s Office has since raised “no objection,” clearing the way for the repeal to proceed.

According to the Ministry, the revocation forms part of a unified regulatory approach designed to strengthen coordination across all agencies in the fight against galamsey.

This legislative step directly complements on-the-ground interventions, including:

The Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP)

The operational coordination of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS)

Officials say the overarching goal is to restore degraded ecosystems, protect water bodies, and revive forest reserves.
