His letter highlights the fact that Dr. Asiamah has already begun performing official duties despite not yet receiving approval from the Council of State
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has formally written to President John Mahama, raising concerns over the appointment of Dr. Johnson Asiamah as the new Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG).
His letter highlights the fact that Dr. Asiamah has already begun performing official duties despite not yet receiving approval from the Council of State.
Dr. Asiamah engaged with the Central Bank’s management on Monday, February 3, even though his nomination has not been finalized.
Referencing media reports on the matter, Afenyo-Markin urged the Presidency to intervene to prevent setting a concerning precedent.
He drew a parallel to judicial appointments, stating, “If a judicial nominee were to assume office and begin administering justice before obtaining the necessary approvals, it would be considered highly inappropriate.” He argued that the same standard should apply to the Bank of Ghana governorship.
Furthermore, he questioned the implications should the Council of State, once constituted, ultimately decide against confirming Dr. Asiamah’s nomination.
The Minority Leader also recommended that Dr. Asiamah halt all official duties at the Central Bank until his nomination is formally approved. While awaiting confirmation, the letter suggested that he could receive necessary briefings informally rather than assuming the role prematurely.
