He emphasized that, as a signatory to the Rome Statute, Ghana not only upholds the ICC's mission but has also made strides in aligning its legal framework with the Statute.

Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has reaffirmed the government's commitment to supporting the International Criminal Court (ICC) in its efforts to combat crimes against humanity.

He emphasized that, as a signatory to the Rome Statute, Ghana not only upholds the ICC's mission but has also made strides in aligning its legal framework with the Statute.

During a meeting with ICC Prosecutor Karim Asad Ahmad Khan, the Attorney-General mentioned that a bill had been introduced in Parliament, aimed at enabling the prosecution of individuals who commit crimes under the ICC's jurisdiction, such as war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Mr. Dame emphasized that incorporating the Rome Statute into domestic law would strengthen Ghana’s position as a democratic nation committed to upholding human rights and dignity. He also pointed out that the ICC complements national judicial systems, ensuring that the most serious crimes are tried within the country’s jurisdiction.

He added that while genocide is already considered a crime in the country, the new legislation would extend legal recognition to other crimes, including war crimes, aggression, and crimes against humanity.

Karim Khan’s visit to Ghana, which is part of a three-day official tour, was initiated by the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA). During his stay, Khan will deliver a public lecture at GIMPA and engage in a special Q&A session with law students.

He has also met with the Chief Justice, Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo, and is expected to visit President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin.

In the meeting with Khan, the Attorney-General was accompanied by key officials, including Deputy Attorney-General Diana Asonaba Dapaah, Director of Public Prosecution Yvonne Atakora Obuobisa, and Chief State Attorney Evelyn Keelson.
