The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has officially handed over a prime parcel of land in Adum, Kumasi, to the Ghana School of Law (GSL) for the construction of a modern legal education campus.

The 1.12-acre land, strategically located behind the Ministries enclave in Kumasi, is expected to serve as the permanent home for the school’s Kumasi campus, marking a major step toward expanding access to professional legal education beyond Accra.

This move fulfills a vision first initiated in 2003 to decentralize legal education, which, until now, has had its only permanent campus in Makola, Accra. While Kumasi has hosted a GSL campus since 2010 through a partnership with Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), the new facility will be the school’s first purpose-built campus outside the capital.

A speech delivered on behalf of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II by the Paramount Chief of the Sampa Traditional Area, Nana Samgba Gyafla II, emphasized the Ashanti Region’s strong commitment to legal education.

The upcoming campus will house lecture halls, moot courts, staff offices, a hostel, banking services, legal accessory shops, law chambers, and a clinic—creating a fully integrated environment for training future lawyers.

Acting Chief Justice, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, hailed the project as a national milestone. He noted that the Kumasi campus has long played a vital role in legal education but lacked the infrastructure befitting its importance.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie also emphasized that the campus would embody more than just physical infrastructure.

He called on stakeholders—from the judiciary and legal fraternity to the public and private sectors—to support the full realization of the project, which he said would instill in future lawyers the values of integrity, service, and leadership.

Director of the Ghana School of Law, Nana Barima Yaw Kodie Oppong, reflected on the historical centralization of professional legal education in Accra, noting how even LLB graduates from KNUST had to relocate to Makola to complete their training.

He recalled that it was Otumfuo’s advocacy that led to the approval of the Kumasi campus in 2010, making this year its 15th anniversary.
