Two Sowutuom residents accused of tampering with the Electricity Company of Ghana’s power distribution system have been granted bail by the Sowutuom District Court.
The accused are 34-year-old Mawuli Bani, described as a self-employed technician, and 62-year-old Joyce Codjoe, a retired cashier.
Both are standing trial on charges of conspiracy and unlawful interference with ECG’s electricity network.
According to the prosecution, the incident traces back to 13 January 2026, when Joyce Codjoe allegedly asked Bani, said to be her nephew, to help resolve an electricity problem at her residence.
But prosecutors say the matter did not end there.
Presenting the facts, Detective Chief Inspector Simon Anatakang told the court that Bani allegedly accessed a transformer that serves the surrounding community and, without approval from ECG, altered the electrical phase connected to the second accused person’s house.
The prosecution says the act disrupted the distribution setup in the area and was carried out without the knowledge or permission of the power company.
The court heard that staff of the ECG Achimota District Office received information about the activity and moved to the location, after which the two accused persons were arrested and handed over to the Sowutuom Police.
Prosecutors further told the court that both accused admitted the act in their caution statements.
