The Ghana Chapter of the African Women Lawyers Association (AWLA-Ghana) has expressed deep concern over the increasing cases of violence against women, particularly intimate partner violence, family violence, and sexual violence.
The Association notes with worry that despite repeated calls for action, these atrocious acts continue to be perpetrated with alarming frequency.
In a statement dated May 28, 2025, and signed by its Public Relations Officer, AWLA highlighted several incidents of gender-based violence that remain unresolved, with perpetrators yet to face justice.
Foremost among these is the case of 40-year-old nursing mother, Madam Afia Koowah, who was raped and brutally murdered in an uncompleted building near the Awutu Breku Eye Clinic in the Central Region. The Association described the incident as senseless, brutal, and a gross violation of women's rights.
The statement also referenced the tragic case of Joana Deladem Yabani, a final-year Biomedical Engineering student at KNUST, who her boyfriend allegedly murdered — a case that continues to spark public outrage.
Another disturbing incident mentioned occurred in April at Twifo Praso, where a teenager, Nana Zinabu, was found dead in her bedroom. Her mouth appeared to have been sealed with glue, and three used condoms were discovered beside her body.
In addition, AWLA reminded authorities of the unresolved case of 32-year-old Rhoadaline Amoah Darko, a Senior Lands Administrative Officer at the Lands Commission, who has been missing for nearly four years, with no concrete information about her whereabouts.
According to the Association, these reported cases reflect a deeply troubling trend of persistent violence against women, and they underscore the urgent need for decisive and sustained action.
AWLA has therefore declared its commitment to closely monitor these cases, especially that of Madam Afia Koowah, and has called on the Ghana Police Service to act swiftly to ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice without delay.
