The Kwabenya Circuit Court has postponed the case involving Nowell Gavu, a man accused of vandalizing six statues at the Airport Roundabout, to December 17.
Gavu, a 37-year-old CCTV technician, appeared composed during his court appearance. The session occurred privately in chambers, as the court awaits a detailed medical report to be reviewed in the upcoming hearing.
A brain scan was previously ordered to evaluate Gavu’s mental condition. He has been charged with causing damage for allegedly smashing the Big Six statues on August 31, 2024.
The incident came to light after a witness saw Gavu using a hammer to break the statues. The witness subsequently reported Gavu to the authorities, resulting in his arrest. Initially, Gavu’s statements were contradictory, but he later explained that a spirit in his dream had directed him to destroy the statues.
Further investigation by the police revealed that Gavu had exhibited unusual behavior and had discontinued his prescribed medication. His uncle had earlier sought treatment for him at the Pantang Psychiatric Hospital.
The court will assess Gavu’s medical report at the next hearing before determining his plea.
