Laying the Bill before the House, Mr Adams said the proposed fund is intended to “hasten the nation’s sports development” by creating a dedicated and predictable source of money for all sporting disciplines, not just football.

Ghana’s Sports and Recreation Minister, Kofi Adams, has presented the long-awaited Sports Fund Bill to Parliament, describing it as a game-changer for financing sports across the country.

Laying the Bill before the House, Mr Adams said the proposed fund is intended to “hasten the nation’s sports development” by creating a dedicated and predictable source of money for all sporting disciplines, not just football.

He told MPs that chronic underfunding has long held back Ghanaian sport, particularly lesser-known disciplines.

The Minister recalled that previous attempts to build a sustainable financing structure for sport had not succeeded, leaving many programmes dependent on ad hoc support.

Mr Adams said the Sports Fund is designed to address these long-standing gaps.

Once approved, he argued, “we will not have the challenges of funding our sports, and sports will grow to bring about development and support other progressive activities that we do in this country.”

For years, non-football federations and associations have struggled to secure consistent backing to send athletes to international competitions, often relying on irregular donations and limited corporate sponsorship.

The Minister expressed confidence that the passage of the Bill will give Ghana’s sports sector the financial backbone it has lacked, enabling more holistic development and better support for athletes across all disciplines.
