The induction ceremony took place last Tuesday in Accra, marking a pivotal moment in the empowerment of young women through legal education and leadership opportunities.
Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo recently inaugurated the newly elected leaders of the Justice Club of the "Orange Girls Network," a support organization for female head porters, known as "Kayayei."
The ceremony, held in Accra last Tuesday, celebrated the election of Asani Abi as President, Adam Barikisu as Vice-President, Sennye Priscilla as Secretary, Salifu Rita as Vice Secretary, Mumuni Jennifer as Organiser and Secretary, and Zakaria Ubeida as Treasurer.
This event signifies a pivotal move towards empowering young women through education in law and leadership opportunities.
The Justice Club, inspired by the energetic and positive connotations of the color orange, is committed to tackling the injustices faced by Kayayei, especially in Accra's busy markets.
Supported by the Judicial Service of Ghana and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the club aims to educate members on human rights and legal issues, helping them navigate the significant social and economic challenges they encounter.
This initiative is part of the Chief Justice's Mentoring Programme, established six years ago by former Chief Justice Georgina T. Wood, the first female Chief Justice of Ghana.
Initially, a one-day event to introduce students to the court system and spark interest in the legal profession, the program has evolved to include both genders and various societal sectors, highlighting the broader impact of the law.
Under Justice Torkornoo's leadership, the mentorship program has been expanded to ensure continuous development for the targeted groups.
She urged the girls to embrace opportunities to excel and contribute positively to society, emphasizing their unique value with the words, ““You are indeed the best, because there is only one of you. There is no photocopy of you. You are unique."
Justice Torkornoo also expressed gratitude to her predecessor, Justice Georgina Theodora Wood, for her trailblazing efforts in mentoring young girls and advancing justice.
She noted that Justice Wood's legacy continues to inspire young women nationwide.
