President John Dramani Mahama has dismissed Dr. George Akuffo Dampare from his role as Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and appointed Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohunu as his successor.
The announcement was made in an official statement from the presidency on Thursday, March 13. Signed by Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the statement noted that the appointment was carried out in accordance with Articles 91 and 202 of the 1992 Constitution, following consultations with the Council of State.
COP Yohunu is set to be sworn into office on Friday, March 14, marking a notable shift in the leadership of the Ghana Police Service as the administration moves to reorganize key security agencies.
With four decades of experience in law enforcement, Yohunu steps into the role at a time when the police force is undergoing crucial reforms.
The government’s statement expressed confidence in his ability to enhance professionalism and strengthen security nationwide.
This leadership change follows a legal challenge initiated by Imani Ghana and security analyst Prof. Kwesi Aning. They have filed a case at the Supreme Court, seeking to prevent the President from dismissing the IGP and other security heads until an ongoing court matter is resolved in May 2025.
