A large haul of counterfeit baby diapers smuggled into Kumasi has been destroyed by the Ashanti Regional Security Liaison after tests confirmed the products were unsafe for use.
The items, disguised under the name of a well-known brand, were intercepted at a warehouse in Asafo following intelligence from National Security operatives. Authorities say the products, suspected to have been imported from Nigeria, were also uncustomed.
Deputy Regional Security Coordinator, Alhaji Tapsoba Alhassan, explained how the operation unfolded. “We observed the offloading and purchased a sample. On inspection, it was clear the products were fake. When asked for documentation, they failed to produce genuine papers,” he revealed.
The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) later confirmed the diapers were counterfeit and posed health risks. Acting on this advice, National Security on August 20, 2025, supervised the destruction of the consignment at a certified Medical Waste Treatment Plant.
Despite the seizure, the owners of the goods have yet to come forward. Investigations are ongoing, while National Security has cautioned traders against dealing in counterfeit and unapproved goods, warning that offenders will face strict action.
