Prosecutors say Azumah attacked the fire officer with a screwdriver after water used to extinguish a blaze splashed on him. He has been charged with causing harm and has pleaded not guilty.

The Achimota Circuit Court is expected to begin the trial of 21-year-old Sampson Azumah on 17 December, following allegations that he stabbed a firefighter at Adjiriganor in Accra.

Prosecutors say Azumah attacked the fire officer with a screwdriver after water used to extinguish a blaze splashed on him. He has been charged with causing harm and has pleaded not guilty.

At a Case Management Conference on 3 December 2025, Chief Inspector Emmanuel Addo told the court that three witness statements had been filed and served on the accused, who is currently without legal representation.

The trial judge instructed Azumah to have the statements read and explained to him. When he asked who should provide the explanation, the judge directed the Registrar to ensure this was done before the next adjourned date.

According to the prosecution, the complainant, Leslie Adjie Tetteh, is a fire officer based at Teshie, while Azumah is unemployed and lives at Adjiriganor, East Legon.

The incident is said to have occurred on 14 November 2025 at about 23:30 GMT. Tetteh, stationed at the Ghana National Fire Service headquarters, was among a crew dispatched to fight a fire at the residence of one Yvonne Okoro at Adjiriganor.

The court heard that the scene drew a large crowd of onlookers, some of whom threw stones at the firefighters as they worked.

After the blaze was brought under control, Tetteh was folding a water hose when Azumah allegedly confronted him, accusing the officer of intentionally spraying him with water.

Prosecutors say Azumah then pulled a concealed screwdriver from a waist bag, stabbed Tetteh in the left arm and fled the scene.

The injured officer was taken to hospital for treatment and later reported the matter to the East Legon Police. A medical form was issued for further care.

On 17 November 2025, Azumah was arrested. Investigators say he admitted the offence, and the screwdriver believed to have been used in the attack was recovered.

Greater Accra Regional Chief Fire Officer, Rashid Nisawu, said the Ghana National Fire Service would continue to attend court proceedings and was committed to seeing the case through.

He warned that softening the Service’s stance in such matters could embolden members of the public to treat firefighters with less respect.
