In a public statement, the Authority said it had taken note of worrying posts by graduates, some of which carried offensive remarks such as “we go scatter them,” and even threats like “snatching people’s husbands.”

The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has raised alarm about a growing wave of disturbing social media activity among recent senior high school leavers.

In a public statement, the Authority said it had taken note of worrying posts by graduates, some of which carried offensive remarks such as “we go scatter them,” and even threats like “snatching people’s husbands.”

According to CSA, these comments have gone viral and are generating public concern.

The Authority reminded young people that although social media is a useful space for self-expression and networking, it comes with responsibilities that must not be ignored. It cautioned that every post forms part of a permanent online record.

“Universities, scholarship boards, and potential employers frequently review social media activity as part of their evaluation process. Irresponsible content can severely damage one’s academic, career, and professional prospects,” the release stated.

The CSA added that beyond reputational damage, such conduct could expose young people to harassment, grooming, cyberbullying, and other online threats.

In severe cases, such behaviour may fall foul of national laws notably the Cybersecurity Act, 2020 (Act 1038), and the Electronic Communications Act.

Graduates were urged to show restraint and decency in their digital interactions, with the Authority stressing that social media should instead serve as a platform for self-improvement, innovation, business promotion, networking, and accessing opportunities.

“As Ghana continues to progress in its digital transformation, the CSA emphasises the importance of promoting positive digital citizenship among the youth,” the release further noted.

The statement also encouraged graduates to think before posting, bearing in mind the lasting nature of their digital footprint, and avoid content that is insulting, indecent, or harmful.

The Authority concluded by affirming its commitment to continue working with partners including the Ministry of Education, community leaders, and civil society organisations to spread awareness on safe and responsible online practices.
