The Interior Ministry has slapped a dusk-to-dawn curfew on Nalerigu and surrounding communities in the North East Region, citing security concerns in the area.
In a statement shared on its official Facebook page, the ministry said the restriction, which runs from 5:00pm to 6:00am, takes effect from Thursday, 18 December, and has been approved “on the advice of the National Security Council and by Executive Instrument.”
According to the ministry, the directive is aimed at restoring calm and safeguarding lives and property.
Government is urging traditional authorities and residents to support the security effort and avoid any escalation.
“Chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, the youth and all residents are encouraged to exercise restraint and use non-violent channels to address grievances,” the statement noted.
Alongside the curfew, authorities have announced a total ban on arms and ammunition, as well as other offensive weapons, within the affected area. Anyone found in possession of such items, the ministry warned, will be arrested and prosecuted.
Additional measures include:
A ban on motorbike movement
A ban on the wearing of smocks
A ban on the sale of fuel in containers
Restrictions on all forms of unlawful assembly
The ministry said these controls are part of a broader security posture to stabilise the township and its environs while stakeholders work toward a more durable resolution of underlying tensions.
