Deputy Minister for Justice and Attorney-General, Dr. Justice Srem Sai, has appealed for calm and objectivity in the public discourse surrounding the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
Speaking in an interview with Joy News on Tuesday, Dr. Srem Sai emphasized that the current proceedings are at a preliminary stage and do not establish culpability.
Addressing the growing political commentary from both ends of the spectrum, he advised against turning the matter into a partisan battleground. “This is a constitutional process. It should be guided by law, not politics,” he stated.
The Deputy Minister’s remarks come after the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) held a press briefing denouncing the suspension, calling it unjust and warning that it threatens the independence of the judiciary.
Dr. Srem Sai also pushed back against sharp criticisms leveled at the Council of State, particularly a comment from former Deputy Attorney-General Alfred Tuah-Yeboah, who described the Council’s advice as “poisonous.”
He found such characterizations troubling. “To speak so harshly without having seen the actual petition is not just premature—it is unfair,” he said. “We must respect the Council and the constitutional role it plays.”
He urged Ghanaians to be patient and allow the legal mechanisms to run their course. “Let’s not jump to conclusions. So far, there’s no indication that constitutional procedures have been violated,” he noted, adding that the Ministry of Justice will remain vigilant throughout the process.
