The upcoming Akwatia by-election, scheduled for September 2, 2025, has been hit with a legal challenge after David Ankomah, parliamentary candidate of the Action People’s Party (APP), filed a suit at the High Court.
Ankomah, who was disqualified from the race along with his party for failing to provide a valid tax clearance certificate, argues that the decision was not accidental but part of what he calls a “deliberate plan” to edge him out of the contest.
“Our lawyers have already placed the matter before the High Court. The case will be heard on August 28, and all we want is justice under the rule of law,” he told reporters.
The by-election was triggered by the death of sitting MP Ernest Kumi, and both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have mounted intense campaigns. The APP’s legal action, however, casts uncertainty over whether the poll will proceed as planned.
