“See that’s what we mean when we say elections are won at the polling station," he noted.

A former Electoral Commissioner of Ghana, Dr Kwadwo Afari-Gyan has advised political parties and candidates in national elections to ensure they have authentic and duly executed pink sheets before deciding to contest election results in court.

He says pink sheets are ‘the most important source documents for reconstruction of election results.’

“See that’s what we mean when we say elections are won at the polling station.”

Addressing lawyers at the 2024 Annual Bar Conference, he called for stiffer punishment for professional election administrators and electronic experts who commit electoral offenses.

“Persons who commit serious election offenses particularly if they are professional election officials or electronic experts must be severely punished for attempting to undermine the will of the people. Possibly a treasonable act," he said.

Additionally, Dr Afari-Gyan voiced his disapproval of the decision to cancel validly cast votes in areas where election disputes arise. He rather suggested a re-run of such instances.

To him, holding new elections in contested areas is the best way to ensure that the true will of the people is represented.

He stated that dismissing valid ballots undermines the democratic process, which he considers unacceptable.

"Canceling legitimate ballots often referred to as wasted votes in some regions, is not the correct approach."
