The Declaration of Commerciality, officially submitted by Eni and its Joint Venture (JV) partners—Vitol Upstream Tano Ltd, Woodfields Upstream Ghana Ltd, and GNPC Explorco—marks the beginning of a new phase for Ghana’s hydrocarbon industry.
Eni Ghana, operator of the Offshore Cape Three Points (OCTP) Block, has declared the Eban and Akoma oil and gas discoveries commercially viable, signaling a major leap toward full development of the fields located in Ghana’s Tano Basin.
“This is a key milestone that brings us closer to increasing Ghana’s oil and gas output while strengthening national energy security and driving economic growth,” Eni said in a statement.
The next step involves the drafting and approval of a comprehensive Plan of Development (PoD) in collaboration with the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), the Petroleum Commission, and the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition.
The move reflects the government’s growing emphasis on responsible energy development alongside its energy transition agenda, aiming to balance fossil fuel exploitation with long-term sustainability.
Eni’s declaration follows extensive technical appraisals confirming the Eban and Akoma fields’ commercial promise. The two reservoirs sit within the OCTP Block, where Eni has operated since 2009, playing a key role in Ghana’s energy infrastructure.
Once fully developed, the Eban-Akoma project is expected to:
Enhance Ghana’s position as a regional energy hub
Create jobs and promote local content
Support national revenue and energy independence goals
The submission is a promising development not only for the oil and gas industry but also for Ghana’s broader economic and energy future.
