Former CEO of the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO), Abdul-Wahab Hannan, has finally regained his freedom after spending two weeks in detention under the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
Mr. Hannan was released earlier this week after meeting bail conditions set at GH¢50 million with two sureties. His wife, who was arrested alongside him on June 25, had earlier secured GH¢30 million bail.
The couple is being investigated for alleged financial misconduct, including money laundering, tax evasion, and causing financial loss to the state. Though EOCO had obtained a High Court ruling granting bail, sources say delays in verifying sureties kept Mr Hannan in custody longer than expected.
The bail conditions sparked sharp criticism from both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Minority in Parliament, with Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei calling them “punitive and excessive”. She warned that such stringent terms could infringe on the rights and dignity of the accused.
Earlier protests outside EOCO’s premises, led by party members and supporters, demanded either a formal charge or immediate release.
Upon his release, Mr Hannan was warmly received by family members who had gathered outside the EOCO compound to welcome him.
Investigations are still ongoing as EOCO continues to examine the financial dealings under Mr Hannan’s tenure.
