Meta has dismantled a Facebook group in Italy where men were secretly sharing intimate images of women with tens of thousands of members.

The group, named Mia Moglie (“My Wife”), had grown to about 32,000 members before being taken down this week for breaching Meta’s Adult Sexual Exploitation policies. Screenshots captured before its removal revealed women photographed in private or vulnerable moments — including while asleep or undressed — accompanied by disturbing comments from men. Some openly fantasized about rape, while others praised the voyeuristic nature of the posts.

Author Carolina Capria, who first drew public attention to the group, described feeling “nauseous and scared” after seeing the content, warning that such casual linking of violence and sexuality online is deeply troubling.

The revelations have sparked outrage among Italians and politicians. Fiorella Zabatta of the European Greens condemned the group as a form of “virtual rape” and called for stronger collective action against toxic online spaces that normalize abuse.

Italy outlawed revenge porn in 2019, making the non-consensual sharing of intimate images a criminal offence. Authorities have reportedly received over a thousand complaints about the group, which is now under investigation by the cybercrime unit.

Meta, in a statement, reaffirmed its ban on any content promoting sexual violence or exploitation, adding: “We do not allow content that threatens or promotes sexual assault on our platforms.”

The discovery has reignited debate about digital misogyny and drawn parallels to high-profile abuse cases in Europe. For critics, the closure of Mia Moglie highlights not just one group’s toxicity, but a broader cultural issue linking control, sexuality, and violence against women.
