This directive follows numerous public complaints about the difficulties Ghanaian citizens face when applying for visas at foreign missions.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has called on all Embassies and High Commissions in Ghana to establish more humane and efficient conditions for visa applicants.

This directive follows numerous public complaints about the difficulties Ghanaian citizens face when applying for visas at foreign missions. Issues raised include inadequate waiting areas, a lack of emergency services, prolonged appointment scheduling, and difficulties navigating visa application websites.

In response, the ministry has officially communicated with all diplomatic missions, emphasizing the need to improve these conditions at their embassies, high commissions, and visa processing centers. The ministry expects foreign missions to take the necessary steps to enhance the experience for applicants.

While recognizing that embassies and high commissions have the discretion to issue visas as they see fit, the ministry assured the public of its commitment to advocating for better treatment of Ghanaian applicants. Officials also pledged to monitor compliance with the recommendations outlined in its diplomatic correspondence.

The high demand for visas has been attributed to economic motivations, as highlighted in the 2024 Afrobarometer report, which found that six out of ten Ghanaians are considering traveling abroad for better opportunities. This surge has also increased visa agencies and application centers, some of which have been criticized for prioritizing profit over service quality.

In some cases, applicants have faced exploitation with little recourse. The Foreign Ministry’s latest intervention is seen as the first step in a broader government initiative to regulate and improve the visa application process in Ghana.
