The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has issued a stern warning against individuals and groups misusing military-pattern uniforms and equipment without authorization.

In a press statement released on Monday, October 14, and signed by Director of Public Affairs Eric Aggrey Quarshie, GAF expressed concern about the increasing number of civilians and private security personnel wearing military attire during public events, such as protests and illegal mining operations.

GAF pointed out that this unlawful use of military gear was particularly evident during public demonstrations in cities like Accra and Kumasi, where some participants and security staff for public figures were spotted wearing military-style clothing, including camouflage.

This trend also observed in anti-illegal mining efforts, has raised concerns about impersonation and the potential risk to public safety and could lead the public to wrongly associate these individuals with the Ghana Armed Forces, thus tarnishing the military's reputation.

GAF reminded the public that wearing military uniforms or using military equipment without permission is a violation of the National Liberation Council Decree (NLCD) 177 of 1967, which strictly prohibits civilians from donning military gear.

The decree states: “No person shall wear or use any military uniforms, equipment, or accouterments or other material unless he or she is a member of the Armed Forces of Ghana.”

GAF cautioned that this violation could lead to criminal activities, as individuals pretending to be military personnel may use their appearance to commit illegal acts.

In response to these concerns, GAF has pledged to take swift action against those who defy the law. They plan to apprehend individuals found wearing unauthorized military uniforms and ensure that legal consequences follow.

The public has also been encouraged to report any suspicious use of military uniforms to the authorities.
