The court, presided over by Her Honour Bernice Mensima Ackon, sentenced him to 15 years’ imprisonment.

A 20-year-old illegal mining operator has been sentenced to 15 years in prison by the Tarkwa Circuit Court after he admitted defiling a 14-year-old student at Nsuaem in the Western Region.

Kelvin Oppong, who lives at Nsuaem, pleaded guilty to defilement and was convicted on his own plea.

The court, presided over by Her Honour Bernice Mensima Ackon, sentenced him to 15 years’ imprisonment.

The prosecution said the victim had completed Junior High School and was awaiting her BECE results to continue to Senior High School.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Samuel Ahiabor told the court that the complainant in the case is the victim’s stepmother.

Both the complainant and the victim live at Nsuaem.

According to the prosecution, the incident happened on May 26, 2026, after the complainant sent the victim into the Nsuaem township to sell sausage and gizzard to raise money for her education.

At about 11 a.m., Oppong allegedly approached the girl under the pretext of buying some of the items.

He gave her a GH¢100 note, but she could not provide change.

The prosecution said Oppong then lured the victim to his house, claiming he would give her money there.

Once they arrived, he allegedly presented himself as a pastor and told the victim he had had a bad dream about her.

He then prayed for her and gave her a concoction to drink.

The court heard that the drink caused the girl to fall asleep.

ASP Ahiabor said Oppong then took advantage of the victim and forcibly had sexual intercourse with her on the veranda of his house.

When the victim regained consciousness, she realised she had been sexually assaulted.

She reported the incident to her stepmother, who later lodged a complaint with the Nsuaem Police.

Police issued a medical report form for the victim to be examined and treated.

She was taken to the Nsuaem Government Hospital, where the endorsed medical report confirmed that she had been defiled.

The prosecution said Oppong was spotted in the Nsuaem township the next day, May 27, by the complainant with assistance from some residents.

He was apprehended and handed over to the police.

After investigations, he was charged with defilement and arraigned before the court.
