The President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), Efua Ghartey, has appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to work closely with the Association in safeguarding the rule of law and consolidating Ghana’s democratic institutions.
Addressing the GBA’s Annual General Conference in Wa, Upper West Region, on Monday, September 15, Madam Ghartey expressed confidence in the President’s leadership.
She also highlighted the importance of building a strong and united Bar that can “speak truth to power,” stressing the Association’s commitment to justice, equality, and fairness for all citizens.
Meanwhile, the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, urged members of the Bar to rise above political divides and remain faithful to the principles of constitutionalism and the rule of law.
Referring to the recent removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, Dr. Ayine questioned why the Association chose to comment on that case while remaining silent in similar past matters.
He recalled earlier Article 146 petitions involving the removal of Lauretta Lamptey as CHRAJ boss in 2015, and later, the dismissal of Electoral Commission Chairperson Charlotte Osei and her deputies in 2017. According to him, all three processes complied with constitutional procedures, yet the GBA only spoke up on the most recent one.
Dr. Ayine emphasized that lawyers in public service must remain a “voice of reason, moderation, and constitutionalism,” adding that the Bar should always speak to defend the independence of the judiciary and the rights of citizens — not to satisfy the agenda of government or opposition.
