The Ghana Bar Association has passed a resolution urging the President to lift the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, criticizing political interference and calling for clear constitutional guidelines for the removal of judges.
At its Mid-Year Conference held at the Labadi Beach Hotel, the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) adopted a resolution urging the President to revoke the suspension of Chief Justice Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Araba Essaba Sackey Torkornoo. The decision was made after members reviewed both the petitions against the Chief Justice and her responses, leading to widespread dissatisfaction with the handling of the matter.
During discussions, members criticized the GBA’s earlier statement dated April 24, 2025, expressing concerns over its tone and implications. Many argued that the suspension lacked sufficient justification and emphasized the need for a constitutional instrument to properly guide the removal of judges, ensuring transparency and safeguarding judicial independence.
The GBA further resolved to denounce political statements made before and after the Chief Justice’s suspension. According to the Bar, remarks suggesting the removal of the Chief Justice based on changes in political leadership undermine the judiciary and threaten the rule of law. The Association stressed the importance of maintaining the judiciary’s impartiality amid political tensions.
In response to the criticisms, the President of the GBA provided a detailed explanation during the conference, defending the Association’s earlier statement. Speaking in a calm and deliberate manner, he outlined the context and intentions behind the communication issued jointly by the President and Secretary of the GBA.
Meanwhile, political parties have announced a demonstration scheduled for May 5, 2025, to protest the suspension. The demonstration follows a joint statement released on April 25, 2025, which cited several concerns about the process and justification for the Chief Justice’s suspension.
