Parliament has advanced efforts to enhance Ghana’s boundary management capabilities by passing the Ghana Boundary Commission Bill, 2023.

The legislation is designed to bolster the nation’s capacity to address boundary demarcation challenges and resolve disputes more effectively.

Originally established under the Ghana Boundary Act (Act 795 of 2010), the Ghana Boundary Commission (GhBC) is tasked with managing the country’s land boundaries. Its key objectives include resolving disputes, fostering cross-border collaboration, and transforming border regions into engines of socio-economic growth.

This bill represents a pivotal milestone in Ghana’s ongoing commitment to ensuring stability and peace along its borders while improving conditions for communities in these areas.

The Commission operates in accordance with international law, as well as protocols from the African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

A Land Boundary Technical Committee oversees land boundary disputes, boundary demarcation, and initiatives to develop these regions. The operational framework of the Commission gained momentum in July 2020 when President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo appointed its first Chief Executive Officer.

Speaking to the Parliamentary Press Corps after the bill’s passage, the Commissioner General of the Ghana Boundary Commission, Major General Dr. Emmanuel Wekem Kotia, expressed optimism about the law’s impact, highlighting its alignment with international standards and its potential to empower the Commission to address boundary concerns more comprehensively.
