In a directive issued to insurers, the Commission said no motor or general insurance transaction should be processed for an individual without a valid national ID under the Ghana card system.
From 1 January 2026, anyone buying or renewing motor or other insurance policies in Ghana will be required to present a Ghana card, the National Insurance Commission (NIC) has announced.
In a directive issued to insurers, the Commission said no motor or general insurance transaction should be processed for an individual without a valid national ID under the Ghana card system.
For corporate customers, the NIC says companies will be required to provide their Tax Identification Number (TIN) when undertaking motor insurance transactions.
The regulator says the move is designed to tighten Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) controls across the insurance market, strengthen customer identification, and improve the handling and verification of claims.
According to the NIC, linking insurance records to the Ghana card is expected to:
Reduce identity fraud and multiple-claim abuses
Enhance the integrity of policy and claims data
Align the insurance industry with international financial services compliance standards
The policy is in line with wider government efforts to make the Ghana card the primary ID for formal transactions. It mirrors similar measures introduced by the Bank of Ghana, which already requires the card for bank deposits and a range of other financial services.
