Ghana’s Minister of Labour, Jobs, and Employment, Dr. Abdul Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to deepening its collaboration with the International Labour Organization (ILO) to address critical labour issues and promote decent work across the country.

Dr. Pelpuo made these remarks during a courtesy visit in Accra by Dr. Vanessa Phala-Moyo, Country Director for the ILO Office covering Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and the ECOWAS Liaison Office.

Recognizing the long-standing partnership between Ghana and the ILO, Dr. Pelpuo commended the organization for its continuous efforts in improving labour conditions and aligning Ghana’s labour policies with international standards. He highlighted key areas where the ILO’s support remains crucial, including the finalization of the Labour Bill, 2024, the review of the National Employment Policy, the fight against child labour, and the protection of vulnerable workers. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of ratifying key labour conventions to reinforce Ghana’s adherence to global labour standards.

Dr. Phala-Moyo, accompanied by National Project Officers overseeing ILO initiatives in Ghana, provided updates on ongoing projects and outlined opportunities for future collaboration. Discussions focused on finalizing the Labour Bill, 2024, developing the Decent Work Country Programme III, strengthening Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), and enhancing occupational safety and health (OSH). Other key areas included Ghana’s participation in fair trade dialogues and efforts to improve labour rights and working conditions.

Dr. Pelpuo reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to fostering a labour-friendly environment that supports job creation and economic growth. He expressed optimism that continued collaboration with the ILO would yield tangible benefits for both workers and employers in Ghana.
