United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres has named Madam Hanna Serwaa Tetteh as the Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL).

She takes over from Abdoulaye Bathily of Senegal, who served as Special Envoy and led UNSMIL until May 2024.

Madam Tetteh brings extensive experience across national, regional, and international levels to this role. She previously served as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy to the Horn of Africa from 2022 to 2024.

Before that, she was the Special Representative to the African Union and Head of the United Nations Office to the AU (UNOAU) from 2018 to 2020. Additionally, she held the position of Director-General at the United Nations Office in Nairobi.

Prior to her engagement with the UN, Madam Tetteh played a significant role in Ghana’s government. She served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2013 to 2017 and was a key member of the National Security Council and the Armed Forces Council. She also held the position of Minister for Trade and Industry from 2009 to 2013.

Between 2014 and 2015, during her tenure as Foreign Minister, she chaired both the ECOWAS Council of Ministers and its Mediation and Security Council. As Trade and Industry Minister, she contributed to Ghana’s economic policies as part of the Government’s economic management team and held board positions with the Millennium Development Authority, the National Development Planning Commission, and the Ghana Free Zones Board.

Madam Tetteh also served as a Member of Parliament under the National Democratic Congress (NDC), representing the Awutu Senya Constituency between 2000 and 2005, and later from 2013 to 2017. Additionally, she played a pivotal role as Co-Facilitator in the High-Level Forum for the Revitalization of the Agreement on resolving the conflict in South Sudan.

She holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from the University of Ghana, Legon, and was called to the Bar in 1992 after completing her postgraduate legal studies at the Ghana School of Law.
