Former Ghana School of Law Director Kwaku Ansa-Asare has pushed back strongly against suggestions that the institution should be abolished following the passage of the Legal Education Bill.

His comments come as debate grows over the future of the school under the new legal education framework, which allows accredited universities to provide professional legal training.

Speaking on Eyewitness News on Citi, Mr Ansa-Asare argued that the new reforms should not be interpreted as the end of the Ghana School of Law.

Instead, he said, the school would remain an important pillar in the training of lawyers, even if its exclusive control over that process has now been removed.

In his view, the real change introduced by the law is not the elimination of the institution, but the end of its monopoly.

He described the Ghana School of Law as one of the country’s most important legal institutions, saying its place in history and its role in shaping generations of lawyers make it too significant to discard. He noted that the school was the first institution in sub-Saharan Africa created specifically for professional legal training and said that legacy should continue to be protected.

For Mr Ansa-Asare, the school’s importance extends beyond Ghana. He argued that its contribution to legal development in the region has made it a symbol of national and professional pride.

He insisted that while universities may now join in delivering professional training, the Ghana School of Law still has a central role to play as a specialist training hub for future lawyers.
