The Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA) is preparing to introduce a Legislative Instrument (L.I.) aimed at regulating shipping line operations and curbing arbitrary charges in the maritime sector, according to its Acting Chief Executive Officer, Professor Ransford Gyampo.
Speaking during an interview on Adom FM’s Burning Issues, Prof. Gyampo voiced concern over unapproved hikes in shipping fees, describing the situation as unfair to businesses and consumers.
To back this enforcement power with legal weight, the Authority is developing an L.I. that will institutionalize the regulation of fees and ensure compliance across the board.
“While some shipping lines are resisting the move, we are committed to upholding the law,” Gyampo said firmly.
He also highlighted a growing challenge at Ghana’s ports, noting that congestion has worsened following a government directive to license excavators in an attempt to clamp down on illegal mining (galamsey). As a result, the Authority has directed all shipping lines to temporarily halt demurrage charges until further notice.
Once passed, the new regulation is expected to bring transparency and accountability to shipping operations, creating a more equitable environment for importers, exporters, and other stakeholders within Ghana’s trade sector.
