This event was held from July 13 to July 26, 2024, at Utrecht University in the Netherlands.

Ghana’s ambassador to the Netherlands, His Excellency Francis Kotia, recently met with a 23-member team of Ghanaian professionals and students who took part in the inaugural African Centre of International Criminal Justice (ACICJ) Summer School at GIMPA Law School.

This event was held from July 13 to July 26, 2024, at Utrecht University in the Netherlands.

Ambassador Kotia welcomed the delegation, which was led by Dr. Kwaku Agyeman-Budu, the dean of GIMPA Law School, at his official residence in The Hague.

During their meeting, the ambassador engaged in discussions to learn firsthand about the team's experiences at both the International Criminal Court (ICC) and Utrecht University.

The Ghanaian professionals shared their insights from the three-day visit to the ICC and their interactions with professionals and professors at Utrecht University.

Ambassador Kotia also took the opportunity to explain the distinctions between career ambassadors and political ambassadors.

He noted that career ambassadors rise through the ranks of the foreign service, while political ambassadors are appointed by the sitting president and require the approval of the receiving state.

In response to a question about instances where a receiving state has rejected an ambassador, Ambassador Kotia recalled two such occasions: one involving an ambassadorial appointee to the Vatican, who was rejected due to being a divorcee, and another involving a proposed ambassador to the United States, who was denied approval because of previous permanent residency in the US.

Following the discussions, Ambassador Kotia presented certificates of participation to the summer school attendees.

The 23-member team consisted mainly of students from GIMPA’s LLM program, including state attorney Abena Nyantakyiwaa Agyemang, private legal practitioner Bernadette Musey, senior state attorney Nana Gyankomah Djaba-Mensah, high court justice Rosemary Baah Tosu, University of Ghana registrar Evans Owusu, police officer Monica Awuah, and private legal practitioner Emmanuella Korkor Tetteh.
