The government has established the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) as a central command hub for coordinating all anti-galamsey efforts.
Announcing the initiative on Wednesday, July 23, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, said the new secretariat will serve as the operational nerve centre for Ghana’s multi-agency crackdown on illegal small-scale mining, which continues to ravage the country’s forests, rivers, and ecosystems.
NAIMOS is expected to play a critical role in surveillance, enforcement, and policy implementation, acting as a single platform where government agencies can share intelligence and respond swiftly to illegal mining threats.
A key part of the Secretariat’s strategy is targeting the influx of heavy-duty mining machinery — particularly excavators — often used in illegal operations. Mr Buah disclosed that the Ministry is working closely with the Ministry of Transport, the Ghana Revenue Authority (Customs Division), and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority to monitor and track all imports of excavators and earth-moving equipment right from the country’s entry points.
