In a major boost to the welfare of frontline emergency responders, the government has introduced a new insurance scheme for personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS). The initiative is aimed at improving morale, enhancing safety, and offering vital protection to officers in the line of duty.
Interior Minister Alhaji Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka made the announcement during the graduation parade of Cadet Course 24 at the Fire Academy and Training School in Accra on Friday.
The ceremony marked the commissioning of 578 newly trained officers, comprising 356 men and 222 women. Among them were 444 direct entrants and 134 in-service officers who were promoted after completing the 24-week course at the GNFS College in Kyebi-Akwadum. The curriculum covered a wide range of topics, including fire science, hazardous materials, building safety, road accident rescue, leadership, public finance, and ethics, alongside intensive physical drills to instil discipline and teamwork.
Unveiling the insurance package, Alhaji Muntaka explained that officers who sustain injuries during service will be entitled to GH¢50,000, while those who suffer permanent disabilities or lose their lives will receive GH¢100,000 in compensation.
The policy forms part of broader efforts by the government to modernise the GNFS and transform it into a multi-hazard emergency response agency. Ongoing investments include the procurement of fire tenders, drones, breathing equipment, protective gear, rapid response vehicles, and enhanced communication systems.
Alhaji Muntaka praised the GNFS for its improved performance, noting that the Service helped save over GH¢150 million in property during the first quarter of 2025—up from GH¢45 million over the same period last year. He attributed the achievement to better training, faster response times, and effective public education campaigns.
During the ceremony, several cadet officers were honoured for outstanding achievements:
OC Priscilla Abena Dede Odoi – Overall Best Cadet
OC Ignatius Kissi Amponsah – Best in Academics
OC Michael Kwabena Gbeve – Best in Foot Drill
OC Richard Kagna Koffi – Commandant’s Award
In his remarks to the graduating class, the Minister urged the officers to carry forward the values instilled during training — professionalism, integrity, courage, and service. “Wear your uniforms with pride and remember that public trust is both a duty and a privilege,” he advised.
The event was graced by Ga Mantse King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, representatives from Okyeman Traditional Council, former GNFS leadership, and heads of sister security services, including the Ghana Prisons Service, Immigration, Customs Division, and the Armed Forces.
