Interior Minister Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka announced at the maiden edition of the Government Accountability Series held at the Presidency on Monday, July 13.

In a major push to strengthen accountability and restore public confidence in law enforcement, the government has announced plans to establish an Independent Police Complaints Commission within the next six months.

Interior Minister Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka announced at the maiden edition of the Government Accountability Series held at the Presidency on Monday, July 13.

The proposed commission will be mandated to investigate allegations of police misconduct, enforce disciplinary measures, and uphold professional standards across the Ghana Police Service. It is expected to function independently of the Police hierarchy, offering the public a more transparent avenue for justice.

“In the next six months, we will begin the process of establishing the Independent Police Complaints Commission,” Mr. Muntaka said. “Its purpose will be to investigate serious incidents and complaints involving police officers and promote public trust in our justice system.”

While acknowledging that many officers serve with dedication, he emphasized that professionalism must remain at the core of police conduct. “They must not use their authority to mistreat the very people they are meant to protect,” he cautioned.

The Interior Minister explained that the initiative aligns with the government’s wider reforms to improve transparency across state institutions and ensure that law enforcement remains fair, impartial, and accountable to the people.

Calls for such an independent body have grown louder in recent years, with civil society groups and citizens arguing that internal police investigations lack credibility and often lead to cover-ups or inaction.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission is expected to be a game-changer in Ghana’s policing landscape, introducing external oversight that many believe is long overdue.

The Government Accountability Series has been introduced as a platform for ministers to update the public on reforms, policies, and key performance indicators across various sectors. More briefings are expected in the weeks ahead.
