The Ministry said it is acting on instructions of the President, while an inquiry into the matter concludes.

The government has suspended the Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) of Sekondi-Takoradi, Abdul Mumin Issah, the Local Government Ministry said in a statement.

The MCE’S suspension follows the incident of dangerous driving by the former, and verbal assault of a police officer, Superintendent Andrew Sarfo near a checkpoint on February 3, 2022.

The Ministry said it is acting on instructions of the President, while an inquiry into the matter concludes.

“Without prejudice to the matter now before court, Government takes a very dim view of the comments made by the Metropolitan Chief Executive during his exchange with the Police,” the statement read.

“The comments by the Chief Executive run contrary to the Government’s belief and work to ensure that our Security Agencies are resourced, empowered and accorded the respect to deliver on their mandates.”

In the meantime, the Western Regional Minister, Mr. Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah has been assigned supervisory authority over the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly.

Mr. Abdul Mumin Issah was detained at the regional police command after the incident on February 3.

He has been charged on three(3) counts of Assault of a public officer, Offensive conduct conducive to breaches of the peace, and Disturbing the peace in a public place contrary to Sections 205, 207 and 298 respectively of the Criminal and other Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

Additionally, the MCE has been charged for Dangerous driving contrary to Section 1 of Act 683 of 2004 as amended by Act 761 of 2008 and is set to be arraigned before the court tomorrow, February 4, 2022.

When he was arraigned in court today, he was granted a GHC 100,000 bail with three sureties.
