Ghana Water Limited says it loses 73 million gallons of treated water daily in Accra due to theft, illegal connections, and faulty infrastructure.
Ghana Water Limited (GWL) is losing approximately 73 million gallons of treated water every day in the Greater Accra region, primarily due to illegal connections, theft, and aging infrastructure.
This was revealed by the company’s Managing Director, Adam Mutawakilu, during an interview on Citi FM on Wednesday, August 6.
“In Greater Accra, we produce about 140 million gallons a day, but we can only account for 67 million gallons,” Mr. Mutawakilu stated. “That means we cannot account for 73 million gallons every single day.”
He explained that the problem is not unique to Accra but is indicative of a wider national issue. According to him, only 48% of the water produced across the country is properly accounted for, meaning more than half is either lost through leaks and theft or goes unbilled.
“Even with the 67 million gallons that are accounted for, we are still unable to collect all the revenue,” he added, highlighting the revenue challenges posed even by the portion of water that is measured.
Mr. Mutawakilu described the situation as “unfriendly,” warning that the continuous daily loss of such a large volume of treated water is severely affecting the company’s ability to maintain operations and provide sustainable water services.
